Power Hubs: pillars, clusters and the six checks

Video coming soon

A Power Hub is a pillar page plus 4 to 8 cluster pages under it, linked both ways and across. Hubs are read from the Site Map: a top-level page with pages under it is the pillar and the pages under it are its clusters. You can also set hubs by hand (the pillar, its clusters, and paths to ignore); hand settings win.

Each hub shows six checks with the pages at fault: the pillar links down to every cluster; every cluster links up to the pillar; every cluster links across to at least one sibling; at least one of the site’s strongest pages outside the hub links in to the pillar; the anchors pointing at the pillar carry a word of the hub keyword and are not all the same text (and never “click here”); and the pillar has a table of contents.

A hub is complete when it has 4 to 8 clusters and every check passes, building when it is short of clusters or links, and broken when the pillar is missing or returns an error. Each hub also shows its ranking keywords, how many are in the top 10 and its Search Console clicks, so you can see which hubs earn.

Put every hub link in adds one Content Queue item per missing link with the page, the target and a suggested anchor; approving the item writes the link on your page over your WordPress connection. Add planned clusters to Content Ideas adds the cluster topics a short hub needs, so the weekly content fills the hub first. Pages outside every hub list the hub they belong in.
